About the Position: This position is located within Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in the Directorate of Medicine Department of Family Medicine's Warrior Ohana Clinic in Honolulu and Kapolei, Hawaii. Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.

Duties

Work as a primary health care provider in an outpatient setting. Provide urgent and non-urgent care for patients of all ages. Manage the care of patients within protocols mutually agreed upon by the supervisor. Perform and/or request special screening tests, request laboratory tests and x-rays and use the results in assessing the patient's medical problems. Assess and interpret patients' needs to medical and/or nursing staff and other members of the health team. Coordinate inpatient/outpatient aspects of patient care. Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings on the physical assessment and laboratory screening. Assess need and institute emergency lifesaving procedures, i.e., cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, until arrival of physician. Develop and provide individual/group patient health teaching as appropriate on topics related to health promotion. Write prescriptions for non-legend and legend drugs after appraisal by the physician preceptor of the practitioner's knowledge of these drugs and their uses IAW pharmacy list as approved by the Therapeutic Agent Board. Periodic evaluation of the proper utilization and dispensing of drugs will be accomplished by physician preceptor.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health/ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 3 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
  • This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights or entitlement based on active military service, recovery from a compensable injury, or return rights based on an overseas tour.
  • This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • Must possess and maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training and certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner/Family Practice): Degree: A graduate or higher-level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in family medicine is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. RN Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. APRN Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse in the specialty family practice or related specialty from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status. Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes 1) Providing family practice APRN duties to patients of all ages, 2) Prescribing medications, 3) Coordinating inpatient or outpatient care, and 4) Maintaining records utilizing a computer based systems. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
