About the Position: This position is located in Directorate of Clinical Support, Nutritional Medicine at the 99th Medical Group at Nellis Air Force Base in Clark County, Nevada. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

Duties

Prepare and cook all types of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, dessert items, sauces, and gravies for regular and special/therapeutic menus. Plan and coordinate the preparation of entire meals involving quantity food production where number of items are cooked simultaneously and require varied cooking methods, timing requirements, many ingredients, and numerous interrelated steps. Prepare menu items to accommodate food allergens, and adherence to religious dietary guidelines, such as Halal and Kosher. Plan and coordinate a full range of food preparation activities involving quantity food production, initiates corrective action when an item does not meet established quality standards, and evaluates final food product. Utilize health, safety, and sanitation practices, procedures, rules, and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Provide guidance on which meats, fish, and other foods are prohibited and which are permitted, and with what degree of frequency in a therapeutic diet, including preferred cooking methods.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • A pre-placement physical examination is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to and including 50 pounds is required.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • Immunization screening is required. Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Cook ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common food preparation duties. I can coordinate with cooking performed at different work centers and operate powered/mechanical kitchen equipment (e.g., choppers, slicers, shredders, grinders and mixers). I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: The worker is subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Working Conditions: The work is performed in the kitchen area which is well lighted, but is often hot and noisy. The worker is exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been mopped or where food has been spilled. The worker is subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water.
