The National Gallery seeks a dynamic Associate/Curator of Native American Art to join its curatorial ranks and expand and solidify its collection, exhibition, scholarly program, and public service in the field of Native American art from what is now known as the United States and global Indigenous art, which is a growing part of our collection and exhibition program.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1015-13/14. GS 13 - Associate Curator For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of curatorial experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, curating art for a museum or other cultural institution. GS 14 - Curator For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of curatorial experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 level in the Federal service, developing Native American art collections. Your application and resume must demonstrate that you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Do not provide a separate narrative written statement. Rather, you must show in your résumé how your past work experience demonstrates that you possess the KSAs identified below. If asked to do so, cite specific examples of employment or experience contained in your resume and describe how this experience has prepared you to successfully perform the duties of this position. DO NOT write "see resume" in your application! Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates. Exhibitions – Skill in organizing exhibitions, from small focus projects to major international loan shows. Collection Development – Ability to research and acquire relevant art pieces for a large collection. Curatorial – Ability to write and develop interpretative art programs for all audience levels. Communication – Knowledge of communication techniques to effectively collaborate with others.  "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures. CTAP/ICTAP candidates: To be considered "well qualified" you must meet all of the requirements as described in this section. You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Education

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    OR

  3. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.
