This position develops the educational program and provides comprehensive educational services to Indian adolescent residents who require inpatient residential treatment at the Youth Regional Treatment Center (YRTC). The YRTC provides residential substance abuse and alcohol treatment to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native youth in order to find healthy directions in life. The incumbent reports to the facility Clinical Director.

Duties

Teaches students by selecting, developing, adapting, and implementing appropriate instructional methods and techniques to provide for academic achievement and social growth. Continuously evaluates individual and group achievement and progress through the use of various instruments and measures and/or other relevant evaluative methods. Use alternative methods of instruction to meet individual needs. Review and adhere to individual education plans (IEP) for residents. Develops adjunctive classroom curriculum for the residents. Modifies and supplements the computer-based education program in order to maximize effectiveness with the YRTC residents. Assesses and plans programs for learning disabilities and remediation needs. Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team providing educational needs assessments and progress reports when needed. Supervises the Education Technician in the completion of their duties and is responsible for annual performance appraisal. Provides coaching, mentoring and training as needed.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT for Teaching Positions: Your application must demonstrate that you meet one of the following basic requirements. A. Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods. For this special education teaching position, applicants must have had at least 24 semester hours (or the equivalent) of course work in special education that included at least one course covering the teaching of exceptional students and courses in the appropriate field(s) of specialization. --OR-- B. Combination of education and experience - Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree but who do not meet the specific course requirements shown above meet minimum qualification requirements if they have completed at least one full academic year of professional teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level as appropriate to the position to be filled. Professional teaching experience is defined as full and primary responsibility for the instruction of assigned students under general supervision in a recognized or accredited school or other accredited educational institution. This includes responsibility for preparation and presentation of lessons and the evaluation of students' progress throughout the learning period, including a determination of the students' success or failure according to established criteria. --OR-- C. Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the private or public sector) performing the following type of work and/or tasks: provide instructional educational services to adolescents; provide learning activities and experiences in assigned subject areas; broad knowledge and experience teaching on both the elementary and secondary school level in multiple subjects; participate in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process including planning and implementation of a student's IEP; evaluate individual and group achievement and progress through the use of various instruments and measures and/or other relevant evaluative methods; and provide consultative, collaborative, and coordinating specially designed instruction with students, parents, and/or other community/school personnel. SELECTIVE FACTOR: Additional to the Basic and Minimum requirements, incumbent must be a California state licensed teacher with specialized training and experience in assessing learning disabilities and planning remediation with an endorsement for a State educational department for providing institutions to special education needs.
