About the Position: Serves as a Legal Assistant in court and a court reporter for the Fort Leavenworth, Installation Legal Office and independently performs a variety of administrative and court reporter duties.
Duties
As a Legal Assistant (Court/Office Automation), you will perform the following duties which is not an all-inclusive list:
Use court reporter software to record and transcribe court proceedings.
Monitor recording equipment to ensure all proceedings are being captured on a digital system.
Make detailed typed notes explaining physical actions by parties to the trial, such as hand gestures, handing exhibits to witnesses for identification, and approaching the bench.
Secure and safeguards evidence during and after proceedings.
Set-up microphones and ensures recording equipment is functioning properly before any proceedings.
Produce an accurate record of trial in final form audio proceedings and court documents.
Research legal, specialized, or technical terminology using dictionaries and other reference materials.
Perform general administrative duties primarily in support of military justice.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Requires ability to type minimum of 40 words per minute (Office Automation).
- Must receive training from the Basic Court Reporter Course or an acceptable equivalent within one year from assignment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance.
- May be required to work and travel weekends/overtime as proceedings and case workloads demand.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and or/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized experience for other than current or former Federal employees: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing court reporter software (e.g., TotalEclipse or Fort The Record (FTR)), preparing legal documents, and compiling pertinent information for legal proceedings based on extensive research in regulations, policies, procedures, case law; etc. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education substitution for all applicants: Completed master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Legal Studies, study of Laws, Dispute Resolution, etc.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience for all applicants: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
