About the Position: As the Conductor, receives written and/or oral instructions from supervisor, serves as crew member in charge with responsibility for the safe operation of the engine, train, and crew within the installation. Directs and assists in daily switching operations. Provides leadership, work direction, and guidance to crew. Responsible for ensuring maximum manpower utilization.

Duties

Directs and assists in the classification, sorting, and switching of cars during loading and unloading of equipment. Directs the train crew by the use of hand signals and/or oral instructions to coordinate whole train movements. Breaks down train deliveries in classification yards, regrouping and switching cars to designated locations. Instructs train crew as required in the yard traffic safety regulations and conveys orders of the supervisor to them. Inspects inbound and outbound freight cars to ensure that each is sealed in accordance with Interstate Commerce Commission regulations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has been designated as key for mobilization and cannot be filled by an active reservist or retiree with call back orders.
  • Irregular work hours required after normal duty hours, weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license and any installation and/or DoD license required for the type of vehicle being driven.
  • Pre-employment physical exam required.
  • Must re-certify locomotive certification triennially (every 3 years).
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid Conductor certification per 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part § 242.
  • Must be able to obtain a certified locomotive engineer certification to operate a locomotive as described in 49 CFR Part 240.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Conductor~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties as a Conductor. I can perform train operation duties to include maintaining records of shipments, coordinating train make up, and utilize proper signals for railroads. I check written requirements for instructions pertaining to a variety of train equipment that is required to move the train. I make emergency repairs to equipment so that the train works efficiently. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Requires bending, lifting, and twisting while operating material handler equipment. Working Conditions: Work is performed in various weather conditions and subject to exposure to rain, heat, and freezing weather. Subject to dust, dirt, and engine fumes. Work is performed at various locations i.e. rail yard, DRRF site, and airfield. Incumbent may be required to workweek ends, nights, or other than normal hours to support training/deployment/redeployment requirements. Ear and eye protective devices and safety shoes will be worn at all times of exposure to hazardous conditions while working as a conductor, locomotive mechanic or locomotive engineer.
