This position is part of the Haskell Indian Nations University, Bureau of Indian Education. As a Recreation Specialist you will be responsible for providing health and wellness activities and events; social and physical recreational activities for Haskell students who reside both on and off campus.
Duties
As a Recreation Specialist GS-0188-5/7, your typical work assignments may include the following:
Assist with planning and scheduling various social and recreational activities for students.
Provide culturally relevant, social, and physical recreational activities for Haskell students who reside both on and off campus.
Assist with implementing, administering, and disseminating the activities calendar.
Assist in conducting student interest surveys to determine appropriate activities and to help evaluate existing programs.
Provide health and wellness activities and events.
Use automation software to create news releases, posters, flyers, etc., to publicize scheduled student recreational activities and/or team sporting events schedules and registration information/deadlines.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
GS-5: 3 years of general experience (progressively responsible experience), 1 year of which equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service, that provided a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, and an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups.
EDUCATION: Successfully completed 4-years of education above high school level with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. Major study must have been in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Have a combination of required education (as defined in B above) and specialized experience (as defined in A above), when combined together meets 100% to qualify for the position. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts and your resume must support the experience.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
GS-7: 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: (1) Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. (2) Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. (3) Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. (4) Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations.

EDUCATION: Superior Academic Achievement which included one of the following: 1) Class standing-applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses; or (2) Grade-Point Average-applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Election to membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society -membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. In order to be creditable under this provision, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Major study must have been in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community
recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR-
Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours) OR superior academic achievement. Major study must have been in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience that together meet the qualification requirements for the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts and your resume must support the experience.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year (52 weeks) of service at the next lower grade level.
