This position is located in the Environmental Management Service at the VA Pacific Island Health Care System - Spark M. Matsunaga VA Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. The primary purpose of this position involves maintaining an integrated pest management program for the facility, with the emphasis being institutional and public health pest control and ornamental and turf pest control. This position includes sanitation duties, administrative duties, and motor vehicle operations of class c vehicles.
Duties
VA Pacific Island Health Care System (Hawaii)
The VA Pacific Islands Health Care System provides access to patient care to over 130,000 veterans across a 2.6M square mile area of the Pacific Ocean. Remote Island locations, separated by great distances of ocean, is the environment in which the VAPIHCS delivers a full range of comprehensive health care services. The VAPIHCS operates eight community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) covering eight county areas. These outpatient clinics are in America Samoa, Guam, Hilo, Kauai, Kona, Leeward, Windward and Maui. VAPIHCS is a Level 3 facility within the VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21).

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Working with a wide variety of insect, vertebrate, and plant pests including those pests that are difficult to locate
Utilizing acceptable and safe integrated pest management principles so that the public risk is decreased Utilizing a suitable and approved pest inspection plan of all buildings, structures and plants
Utilizing a broad knowledge of pesticide toxicity, chemical solutions, and baits, as well as knowledge of the physical characteristics, lifecycles, and feeding habits of a wide variety of pests
Utilizing knowledge and deployment methods of insect growth
Utilizing spraying and dusting equipment by using appropriate formulas and guidelines to ensure proper balance of pesticides
Maintaining a current State of Hawaii Pesticide Applicator Certification, specifically for the following three categories: Category (3) - Ornamental and Turf Pest Control; Category (7) - Industrial, Institutional, Structural, Health Related Pest Control; and Category (8) - Public Health Pest Control.
Assisting in housekeeping operations during tour of duty and carrying out all duties assigned by Housekeeping supervisory staff as they relate to the sanitation and cleanliness of the hospital
Performing a full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area by using various preparations to clean and maintain floors, walls, ceiling surfaces, rugs, windows, and areas such as storerooms, offices, patient rooms, corridors, stairways, and restroom
Operating powered cleaning equipment and performing operator preventive maintenance on equipment
Providing administrative assistance to Environmental Care chief and supervisors in regards to document preparation and supply requests and tracking
Be able to operate common facility vehicles such as automobiles, van, buses, and other vehicles up to 22,800 pounds GVW, including forklifts on up to 5000 lbs
Performing other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:00 a.m. to 03:30 p.m.

Qualifications

A current valid Pesticide Applicator Certification from a State (COPY OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)
A current valid Driver's License from a State (We cannot accept photographs, so please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You may be required to show your valid driver's license at the time of your interview.)
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work at this grade involves a level of physical effort as follow. The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts, bending, crawling, and stooping. Candidate must be able to lift and handle materials weighing over 50 pounds and carry chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. Occasionally climbs ladders to spray in ceiling or rafters and to prune or trim vegetation.
WORK CONDITIONS: The work at this grade involves a level of work conditions as follow. Work is primarily done inside with outside work scheduled as needed. Inside work is in a temperature-controlled environment. In working outside, incumbent is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes to chilly or rainy weather. Being exposed to dirt, dust, mud, and sometimes to chemical sprays and dusts. Personal protective equipment (such as gloves, safety shoes, and boots) is provided by the agency.
