About the Position: Serve as a Physical Science Technician at Fort Liberty Directorate of Public Works, Exterior Branch, Operations and Maintenance Division where you will perform a variety of complex assignments with a great deal of independence according to established guidelines and procedures.
Duties
Performs technically and procedurally complex analytical tests on water and wastewater.
Prepares and submits laboratory results as indicated by current procedures and regulatory requirements.
Performs physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis, determinations on samples collected from water and wastewater collection systems, distribution systems, wells, swimming pools, lakes, streams, tanks, etc.
Documents, reports, and maintains findings in accordance with current installation, state, EPA, and Federal regulations.
Performs routine user maintenance and inspects laboratory equipment for any needed repairs.
Instructs field personnel on the proper use of laboratory equipment, laboratory analysis, quality control procedures, and pertinent sampling and transportation protocols.
Ensures all monitoring, sampling, analyses, and reporting is performed for assigned distribution systems, and all compliance drinking wells through inhouse or contract certified laboratory analysis and reporting.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Employee must be able to obtain and maintain at minimum a NC Class C Well Water Certification issued by the State of North Carolina.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires incumbent to utilize an automated information system comprised of hardware and software components in accomplishing the work.
- Incumbent must be willing and able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- Incumbent must be willing to obtain and maintain a valid government vehicle operator's permit for a 1/2 ton vehicle and passenger vehicle.
- This position is designated as day shift, Monday-Friday (excluding holidays).

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service which includes: 1.) Assisting with chemical analysis to include preparation in a laboratory setting following published and/or standard operating procedures; 2.) Performing required analytical method quality control for higher level review; AND 3.) Accurately maintaining records related for assigned laboratory procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
