This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. The Recreation Specialist (Team Leader) is responsible for establishing, developing, and implementing comprehensive social activities, bus trips, and entertainment which generates healthy lifestyles, encourages fellowship, boosts morale, and offers stimulation to a diverse senior population of approximately 500 Residents and provides the best quality of life available to them.

Duties

As a Lead Recreation Specialist, you will: Oversee three (3) other staff positions related to recreation services. The incumbent will oversee the operation of the agency's Guest Room Suites, Theater and its programs, Golf Course, Fitness Center, Swimming Pool, Gardens, Fishing Ponds, Arts, Crafts and Hobbies, to include Ceramics, Fine Arts, Woodshop, General Crafts, Bike Shop and the Auto Hobby Shop. Lead the team in identifying, distributing, and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established work flow, skill level and/or occupational skill set, making adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks; and ensuring that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product. Articulate and communicate to the team the assignment, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, milestones, and/or program issues under review; and deadlines and time frames for completion. Submit the annual appropriated and non-appropriated budget for the areas of responsibility; exercise responsibility for the internal management control in, accounting, bookkeeping, collection, budgeting, reporting and evaluating for all assigned areas. Plan, supervise, create and implement a wide variety of trips/tours on a monthly basis. Trip instructions are completed monthly for the transportation company and coordinated with the trip callers. Assist with coordinating entertainment for the Residents and arranging special events and programs as needed. Serve as a liaison with other organizations, agencies and businesses that support the senior population which will enhance partnerships for programs, volunteer support, services and discounts. Attend workshops, clinics, and meetings sponsored by community, government, military, and/or civilian agencies within similar areas of interest based on funds availability.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Specialized Experience for the GS-09: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: - Provides assistance with arranging and carrying out trip/activities; AND - Working cooperatively with volunteers assigned to recreation activities or trips. OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows A related master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. Related degrees include: general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Combining Education and Experience: When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education for positions at grade GS-9. The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring standing, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning Residents. Must use proper body mechanics when lifting objects and use lift equipment for Residents. The work may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as lifting objects greater the 50 pounds or defending oneself against physical attack. SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.
