About the Position: This position is a Paralegal Specialist, GS-0950-9/11, position with the Army Tank-Automotive and Armament Command (TACOM), Legal Office located in Warren, MI.
Duties
Conduct fact-finding, research, and analysis assignments.
Organize and maintain the U.S patent docket by identifying deadlines, resolving deficiencies in docket data, documents, etc.
Process and analyze all patent related correspondences in all phases of U.S. patent prosecutions, from pre-filing to final maintenance of issued U.S. patents.
Perform all electronic interactions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Assist attorneys with preparing documents to be filed with the USPTO, including utilizing the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP) to determine filing contents, procedures, etc.
Conduct fact-finding, research, and analysis assignments as directed by the Intellectual Property (IP) Law Division Chief.
Assemble documents, legislative files, and other materials to be reviewed or distributed.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- You may be expected to travel up to 5% of the time for this position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Review docket data for deficiencies; AND 2) Utilize electronic filing systems and/or databases to acquire or store information; AND 3) Research a variety of legal subjects for attorneys utilizing legal research procedures and methods; AND 4) Prepare legal documents ensuring legal references are accurate. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Pre-Law or Paralegal Studies.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Specialized Experience: GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent which includes 1) Organize and maintain a legal case docket and/or patent case docket; AND 2) Process and analyze legal correspondence/files and/or patent related correspondence/files; AND 3) Utilize appropriate procedures for legal filings for applicable venues and/or the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP) for patent filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO); AND 4) Handle electronic legal filings with applicable jurisdictions and/or electronic patent filings with the USPTO. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Law or Paralegal Studies. NOTE: You must submit transcripts.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
