Organizational Location: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA), in Miami, Florida.
This is a bargaining unit position that is not currently covered by a bargaining unit agreement.
Duties
As a Lead Legal Assistant (OA), you will perform the following duties:
Overseeing assignments, including special projects, and continually reviewing the status and progress of the work unit, distributing workload among employees, making day -to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities;
Instructing and training employees in specific tasks and job techniques, making available written instructions, reference materials, and supplies;
Inputting and gathering data from a variety of databases to ensure complete case information is current and available to all users;
Drafting memoranda, motions, responses, and correspondence based on guidance from attorneys; and
Analyzing workload, preparing reports, and making recommendations to the supervisor to improve the quality of work and efficiency in completing tasks.

- Probationary Period: This is a full-time permanent position (Career/Career-Conditional appointment). Upon appointment to this position, you may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

You qualify for the GS-08 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-07 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:
Gathering information from numerous sources to prepare case files for court proceedings;
Performing basic research by reviewing and analyzing case materials;
Performing support functions related to tracking and managing court dockets (i.e., maintaining calendars and reminding attorneys of court appearances and deadlines); and
Assisting attorneys in preparing memoranda, basic motions and/or appeals.
Typing Proficiency: In addition to the above minimum qualification requirements, applicants must be able to type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample, with three or fewer errors. You may self-certify your proficiency in your resume/application package.
