About the Position: This position is with the Dept of Clinical Investigation located at Tripler Army Medical Center on the Island of Oahu.
Duties
Observe animal appearance and activity for normal condition and behavior, recognizing obvious signs of illness, injury, or discontent.
Perform routine and prescribed animal feeding, watering, housing, psychological and environmental enrichment, and other species-specific husbandry.
Perform and/or assist with prescribed animal medical treatments.
Responsible for maintaining an optimal animal husbandry environment, to include proper caging and accessory, facility, and equipment sanitization and organization.
Maintain animal facility grounds, and coordinate repair and maintenance of facilities and duty-related equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
- Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain vaccinations for rabies, tetanus and influenza.
- This position requires work on weekends or holidays, depending on manpower availability within the department.
- This position requires a pre-employment and annual physical.
- Position requires a one-year probationary period.
- Position requires up to 75 pounds of heavy lifting.
- This position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
- In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) ANIMAL CARETAKER ~ without more than normal supervision. Maintain inventory records for feed, bedding, and other supplies as required; prepare reports to supervisor regarding laboratory animals' food and water consumption. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT Animal care and grounds/facility maintenance duties will involve the movement and manipulation of heavy, awkward, and potentially injurious equipment, and the handling and restraint of less than cooperative animals. Such duties must be undertaken with proper personal protection provisions, and when appropriate, with personnel or mechanical assistance. Duties require prolonged standing, frequent bending and lifting, and standing/working on hard concrete or asphalt ground surfaces. Occasionally lifts and carries materials weighing up to 80 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS Animal care and maintenance duties are performed in both indoor (climate controlled) and outdoor environments. Animal care and use facilities are a combination of modern, conventional laboratory animal use design, and a farm-like barn and pasture environment for the husbandry of sheep, goats, and pigs. Potential duty-related hazards include animal bites, scratches, and kicks; animal related allergies; heat/steam injury from cage washing; exposure to potentially hazardous compounds and materials; lifting and crush injuries from heavy animals, caging systems, and grounds maintenance equipment. Operates transport vehicle in all weather conditions in a controlled traffic environment on and off the installation.
Education
