These positions are located in the California Desert District Office in Palm Springs, CA, the Mother Lode Field Office in El Dorado Hills, CA and the Ukiah Field Office in Ukiah, CA. Duties

Prepare, evaluate, and conduct progressively more complex analysis of botanical and plant responses as they relate to land and water resource projects. Complete botanical surveys and clearances to assist with the processing of permit applications and projects to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law. Implement the habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office. Monitors and surveys sensitive species and their habitats. Document, evaluate, and report changes in habitat status. Utilize GIS and GPS technology to complete plant surveys, identify impacts to Threatened and Endangered Species, and evaluate inventory and monitoring data to determine plant population trends and impacts. Serves on an interdisciplinary team to address botanical and natural resources issues and problems. Collaborate with supervisor and other specialists to write and review botanical input for environmental assessments, biological assessments, protective stipulations, and resource management plans.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement, in order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To qualify for the GS-0430-09 grade level, In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Assisting in the evaluation and monitoring of the threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs. Locating, surveying, identifying, and recording threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements. Collecting and summarizing data and administering plant species projects. -OR- Education: Two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. To qualify for the GS-0408-09 grade level, In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: experience conducting plant and wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, revegetation/restoration planning, plant community/association mapping, assisting with permit preparation, and assisting with contract administration. Reviewing, researching, and analyzing biological data, issues, and information that support project recommendations. Utilizing systems such as ArcGIS and GPS field data collection systems. Assistance with wildfire restoration projects. -OR- Education: Two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you meet one of the below requirements:

ECOLOGY 0408:

You must possess a degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least:

  • 9 semester hours in ecology, and
  • 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
BOTANY 0430:
1) A degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
OR
2) Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Education: Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying.
