This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for certain positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This is PERMANENT Engineering Equipment Operator position with the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Jackson, SC.

Duties

Operates various types of heavy engineering equipment, such as motor graders, transport trucks, dump trucks, wildland fire engines, and bulldozers/crawler tractors. Maintain roads using motor grader. Performs operator’s maintenance on all equipment to ensure equipment remains in service. Operates equipment according to specifications of work performed, making adjustments to attachments as needed. Is primary equipment operator for wildfire suppression and participates in prescribed burning.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must submit to and pass "Random" Drug Tests.
  • Must have Class B Commercial Driver's License or be able to obtain one within six months.
  • Is subject to callback 24 hours a day seven days a week in case of emergency to suppress wildfires
  • Subject to weekend shift assignments.
  • This position requires the wearing of protective equipment, e.g., nomex clothing, safety glasses, etc.
  • Pre-appointment/annual physical is required.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Experience performing common engineering equipment work; operating engineering equipment such as bulldozer, motor graders, and driving trucks with trailers and tractor - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Uses heavy physical effort in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Work is strenuous because of constant vibration of the equipment, jerking and jolting from operating over rough areas and surfaces, and requirements for frequent adjustments under adverse operating conditions. Working Conditions: Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather, on slopes, graded shoulders, soft ground, and other surfaces with similar rough features. Subject to the possibility of injury from equipment overturning. Is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, burns and smoke from wildland fire activities. Is also exposed to the possibility of injury from unexploded rounds of ammunition when working in impact areas.
