This position is located in the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Lebanon, PA The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities will include: Performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage Installing, modifying, and repairing plumbing and electrical systems Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility Constructing/framing metal stud dry wall partitions and drywalling, mudding, taping, and plastering Patching and painting various surfaces Performing snow removal using vehicles for snow plowing, snow blowers, and shoveling Keeping storage areas clean, orderly, and organized to maintain an accurate inventory of supplies, tools, and materials Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions Reading and interpreting work orders, instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades Performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function Working with wood or wood substitute materials, gypsum board or fiber-cement board, concrete/rebar, glass, etc. Installing laminate and protective coverings on various surfaces Laying concrete block brick and performing minor masonry repairs Performing related duties as required. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/31/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Minimum Qualifications: I have the ability to perform common maintenance Mechanic Leader tasks. I can operate common hand tools and measuring devices of the carpentry, or painting trades to perform simple maintenance tasks. In addition, I have the ability to install or repair a variety of items such as carpets, door fixtures, counter tops and/or floor/wall tiles. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. s. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Demands and Work Environment: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty, and greasy and contain bad odors. The Maintenance Mechanic is: subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes, and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns, and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing, and safety equipment is required as needed.
