This position is located at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Duties
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by IAMAW. Please note that as provided for in the IAMAW/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities and all other eligibles.
Incumbent assures individual work assignments for the crew are properly prepared for and carried out. Relays to other workers instructions received from the foreman and is responsible for getting work started. Works along with other employees, demonstrating and instructing on proper work methods, habits and safety. Responsible to ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available for all facets of work and/or needed stocks are obtained from various supply sources.
Work assignments the Work Leader oversees and participates in include, but are not limited to:
Gravesite Preparation: Uses section maps and bench markers to ensure correct graves are marked, opened and utilized for all first and second burial operations, matching gravesite information to that provided on the daily burial schedule and dig slips. Properly opens and closes gravesites, to include digging graves to proper depth, size and dimensions.
Grave Maintenance: Follows proper backfilling procedures, adding fill material and properly compacting completed gravesites; refilling sunken graves with topsoil at the proper level and properly compacting fill materials, allowing room for sod or compost for seeding procedures. Communicating and coordinating with the Cemetery employees responsible for the seeding or sodding of grave sites throughout the cemetery.
Heavy Equipment Operation: Operates heavy equipment to push, pull, pile or load earth and dig graves; Operates mini-excavators, backhoes, wheeled vehicles, wheel-mounted tractors and engineering and construction equipment with wheel or crawler type traction.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,07/31/2024.
Your background must demonstrate work involved in interment activities, including layout and excavation of new grave sites, and reopening occupied gravesites which require extreme caution to avoid damage to previously interred containers. As work leader, the incumbent motivates and advises other employees to follow instructions received from foremen and to meet deadlines.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: This position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting or pushing and may require incumbent to lift and move objects 80 pounds and over in the performance of assigned tasks, headstones weigh 230 pounds and are handled by two employees.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outdoors in mild, rainy, and windy weather conditions. There is a risk of injuries from accidents or equipment failure. Employee will be exposed to vibrations, jolts, heat, cold, rain, sleet, dust, loud noise, mud, water, ice and fumes in the performance of official duties.
