You will serve as a Environmental Protection Assistant (Motor Vehicle Operator) in the ENVIRONMENTAL DIVISION, OCC SAFETY,HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL OFC of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will identify proper control of hazardous materials/waste. You will inspect, sample, track, and inventory all incoming/outgoing/in-storage Waste Hazardous Material-Hazardous Waste (WHM-HW) . You will repack, consolidate, or blend similar wastes into proper DOT shipping containers. You will perform pre-shipment checks, inspections, and assembly for shipping WHM-HW designated for disposal. You will perform facility and regulatory compliance inspections and submit regular reports required for regulatory compliance.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license and must be able to obtain state CDL endorsement for Hazardous Waste.
  • This position may require occasional travel from normal duty station.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Handling, consolidating, repacking and/or tracking hazardous waste/hazardous material. Using computers and automated programs; interpreting the utilization and implementation of hazardous waste/hazardous material spill contingency plans. Demonstrating knowledge of environmental regulations (i.e., Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), State of Maine Hazardous Waste Management Regulations, Clear Air Act (CAA), Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulatory requirements.
