This position is located with the Forage Seed & Cereal Research Unit (FSCRU) in Corvallis, OR

Duties
The incumbent will utilize ongoing soil and management data as well as pending sampling efforts, to measure, monitor, report, and validate soil health,
C sequestration potential, and GHG fluxes for agricultural systems in the Pacific Northwest (at field and watershed/ regional scales).
Ideally, the incumbent will have modeling experience and contribute to the calibration and utilization of a biogeochemical model to estimate how shifts in management impact C sequestration potential.
Additionally, the incumbent will contribute to the development of a soil inventory including digital maps and a soil health management index, specific to the grass seed crop system across the region.
The incumbent will lead the analyses and manuscript drafts and oversee undergraduate research assistants. Additional hypotheses and research objectives may be developed and tested as part of independent inquiry.

Qualifications
This position requires a recent (within the last 5 yrs), Ph.D in soil science, environmental science, biogeochemistry, ecology, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Additionally, Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) for GS-0470 (Soil Scientist) Series
Basic Requirements
Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The experience needed to perform the duties of this position includes:
Strong statistical and data analysis experience
Ability to publish results in peer-reviewed literature
Strong familiarity with R
Proficiency in general computer programming
Interest in soil health and general soil science principles
