About the Position: : Performs the duties in the Food Protection Program within the Veterinary Services Division (VSD) of the US Army Public Health Command, East (PHC, E). This position is located in Fort Meade, Maryland.
Duties
Plans, develops, and conducts Initial, Routine, Directed, and Special Food Protection Audits of commercial food establishments for the PHC throughout the AOR.
Performs audit administrative tasks to which includes tasking, tracking, and reviewing reports within the PHC.
Conducts on the job food protection audit training for Veterinary Corps officers and enlisted personnel.
Serves as the command’s Food Defense Program lead.
Manages the PHC All Food and Drug Activity (ALFOODACT) program for hazardous food and non-prescription drugs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 50% of the time.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Basic Requirement for Consumer Safety Officer (Subsistence):
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in quality assurance or a related degree that included at least 30 semester hours in one or a combination of the following: consumer laws, biological sciences, food science, chemistry, pharmacy, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, legal investigations, law enforcement, or related scientific fields that provided knowledge directly related to consumer safety officer work. The 30 semester hours may include up to 8 semester hours in statistics, or course work that included the principles, theory, or practical application of computers or computer programming.
OR
Combination of education and experience--courses consisting of at least 30 semester hours in the fields of study described in paragraph above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualifications listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing a variety of sanitary audits of food establishments; assigning inspection ratings and ensures the correctness of findings to adequately assess an establishment's acceptability for subsistence procurement or storage. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
