The primary purpose of the position it to provide multi-skilled direct patient care, provider and nursing support in Urgent Care Center. The position is located in the Urgent Care Center, Outpatient Nursing Service, at Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center located in Spokane, Washington. This is the full performance level of the position.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
-Provide the Urgent Care with technical support for providers and nurses to optimize patient care.
-Assist in providing technical care to the patients by performing phlebotomy, 12 lead EKGs, implementation of cardiac monitoring, vital sign monitoring, performing point of care testing, performing wound care, removing simple sutures or staples, conducting Snellen Eye tests, obtaining lab specimens, patient transport to other departments, and documents all care and procedures provided.
-Communicates well with the care team both provider and nursing staff. Reporting patient observations and patient objective information and data. Recognizes patient deterioration from baseline and alerts the care team immediately.
-Performs chest compressions and is competent in Basic Life Support.
-Assist the Urgent Care staff with technical support by assisting the patient for the exams by holding positioning or preparing the patient for the exam. Sets up room with the necessary equipment required for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (i.e.paracentesis and sterile field).
-Apply a variety of orthopedic devices such as prefabricated cervical collars, shoulder immobilizers, rib belts, clavicle braces, and wrist, knee, elbow and ankle braces. Fits patients for crutches and provides crutch training.
-Make fiberglass splints for injuries involving long bones such as the tibia, malleolus, radius, ulna, humerus, and femur. Bi-valves, windows cast as ordered by the provider, able to use the cast cutter. Duties are required when Specialty Clinic is closed or busy and Ortho Techs are unavailable to assist.
-Assist with the management of patients in psychiatric crises. Maintains certification in PMDB Level IV. Provides 1:1 close observation and documents appropriately on flow sheet.
-Observe and report to the care team any patient for signs of distress, such as worsening respiratory status potentially leading to respiratory arrest, hypotension/hypertension, cramps, nausea, vomiting, or cyanosis.
-Provide direct personal patient care and assist patients' transfers and assistance as needed.
-Cleans equipment and workspace. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers for repair. Stocks supplies. Maintains inventory, ensuring all items are current and intact.
-Document pertinent patient observations, nursing care provided, and other data in the Electronic Health Record and on emergency room flow sheet records during downtime.
-Train staff on various patient care processes, and orient health technicians to the department and equipment.
-Answer the phones promptly and in a courteous manner identifying the unit and the Health Tech's name.
-Coordinate with Urgent Care staff to ensure that orders and procedures are communicated to the care team promptly.
-Coordinate with ancillary services ensuring smooth trouble-free movement between departments providing services and the Urgent Care.
-Maintain files and records. Assists with the administrative processing of patient care and flow.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
Promotion Potential: This position is at the full-performance level of GS-06.

Individual Occupational Requirement
Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Education and Training: For GS 5- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Properly collects, handles, labels, processes, records, and delivers specimens while adhering to patient identification, safety, infection prevention and control policies and universal precautions; draw blood cultures; instruct patients in proper collection techniques of specimens; receive and prepare test requests, and specimens into the clinical laboratory and verify accuracy and completeness of the requests; maintain a clean phlebotomy workstation and storage areas stocked with phlebotomy supplies; enters all test requests into the facility's computer system. Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
