This position is located at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in the Transportation section of the Environmental Management Service. The Motor Vehicle Operator participates in the overall driving support of the healthcare system.
Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Operating a variety of motor vehicles with toad capacities up to 2 1/2 tons and a 19 passenger bus.
Transporting ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, passengers, freight and linen on and off station and other points.
Assisting the Fleet Manager with coordination of a 27S vehicle motor pool for employees off station trips, maintenance, repair, etc.
Transporting employees within the Medical Center grounds using a 19 passenger bus, and drives same for special events.
Operating a variety of vehicles off station for emissions testing, maintenance, and repairs.
Transporting staff to and from various locations upon request.
When transporting patients without the assistance of nursing aide, is totally responsible for the patients' comfort and welfare to include assistance in and out of vehicles, wheelchairs, and help up and down steps and in and out of places of residence.
Conversing with all levels of staff and patients in scheduling dally motor pool assignments.
Using a computer terminal as required.
Responsible for the safety of the equipment and vehicles she/he operates and must have a working knowledge of the same so as to notice any signs of mechanical trouble.
Making emergency repairs on the road, such as changing flat tires or other minor repairs.
Performing other related duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with possible weekends and holidays

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Extensive physical effort includes pushing and pulling wheelchair and stretcher patients for loading and unloading. May be required to 11ft patients from wheelchairs into vehicles; with assistance carry
wheelchair patients up and down stairs, steady patients when walking and lift litters in and out of ambulances. Other physical effort is required in maneuvering vehicles. reaching and bending to mount/dismount, jarring of the body over rough road conditions and other physical effort in cleaning and maintenance.
The position will be exposed to congested traffic conditions, unsafe roads due to torrential rains, fumes and dust. Incumbent may be in contact with diseases from patients. Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to summer heat and winter cold when loading and unloading patients. The incumbent must also wear any required safety devices that may include, eye, hand, foot and respiratory protection.
