You will serve as a RIGGER in the RIGGING & OPERATIONS DIVISION, LIFTING & HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. This is a RE-ADVERTISEMENT of Announcement Number ST-12455887-24-LNB. Applicants that have previously applied NEED to re-apply to this announcement.

Duties

You will receive work assignments orally or by work orders from the Rigger Foreman. You will check gear to assure that it is properly maintained and useable to prevent damage to equipment, material handled, or injury to themselves or other workers. You will perform special purpose lifting requirements associated with the refueling and defueling of naval nuclear submarines. You will devise means of overhead structure, surface conditions, obstacles, and size of surrounding openings in relations to size and shape of object.

Requirements

  • You may be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO PROVIDE PRODUCTION SUPPORT SERVICES: *Makes difficult load routing judgements by considering size, shape, and location of object, availability, and strength of helpers. *Plans weight distribution and load maneuvering braces, cushions, and otherwise prepares loads, and attaches appropriate lifting gear. *Directs operators of cranes or other weight handling equipment by standard signals. *Uses complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over, under, and around obstacles by tilting, dipping, and turning the suspended load. *Directs crane operations during these evolutions using only voice communications where landing and lifting tolerances are close as less than one inch.
