The Government Wide direct hire authority for Economist and Physical Sciences is being used to fill this position. GS15 Salary: $163,964 (Step 1) to $191,900 (Step 10) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

The mission of the USGS National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) is to collect, analyze, and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of, and demand for, minerals and mineral materials essential to the economic and national security interest of the United States. The Center performs a unique role within the Federal government in delivering statistical information regarding a wide range of essential and critical minerals to a diverse set of high-level stakeholders, including the Executive Office of the President; Departments of State, Defense, Commerce, and Energy; Security and Exchange Commission; Federal Reserve; and intelligence community. Much of the work involves gathering data on the production, consumption, and processing capacity for each commodity, as well as analyzing its global mineral supply-chain. The Center produces several hundred publications annually which are relied upon by both the domestic and international communities. The Center's goal is to provide decision makers with the information required to ensure that the United States has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals and materials to meet its defense, strategic, and economic needs at acceptable costs. The role of the Center Director is to provide high-level, senior leadership and strategic vision to a Center of approximately 115 employees as well as keeping USGS senior leadership appraised of important interactions with external partners. Qualifications

0110 - Economist - BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Economist, all grade levels. Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semesters hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. Combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. 1301 - Physical Scientist - BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-15: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in economics and/or physical sciences that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: Serving in a senior leadership role within a Science Center or Program (e.g., Deputy/Center Director, Section/Branch Chief, Associate/Program Coordinator) and/or comparable experience within another Federal, state, academic, or private organization. Supervising and/or providing direction to a large group of scientists and technical staff conducting research, analysis, and reporting on mineral and/or other natural resource commodities and economics at the national to global scales. Providing administrative oversight of science planning and execution for a complex and high-profile multimillion-dollar program. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
