Duties
WHAT IS THE TAXPAYER SERVICES DIVISION?

Vacancies will be filled in the following specialty areas: IRB CUST SERV SECT 1 and CUST SERV SECT 3.
The following are the duties of this position at the full working level.
Provides telephone support to a wide range of customers with varying degrees of understanding, or who possess a professional understanding of tax law regulations relative to information returns.
Provides full explanations to information reporting, information return preparation and filing inquiries initiated by customers, and through generated notices, or internally generated assignments.
Provides technical information to taxpayers on a wide range of information returns, and limited assistance in other tax areas (e.g., filing, underreporting, password reset, and/or other requirements).
Provides assistance and guidance to customers on a wide range of information returns and forms including, but not limited to, Forms 1096, 1097, 1098, 1099, 3921, 3922, 5498, 8935, W-2G, W-2 and W-3, either electronically or on paper forms.
Assists customers in answering Service-initiated requests on information reporting and filing.
This position has career progression. If you are selected at a grade level lower than the full working level, you may be non-competitively promoted as your career progresses. For example, you may be hired as a GS-05, but if the position has career progression to GS-11, then you may move from a GS-05 to a GS-11 in as little as three years.
Qualifications
Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement OR time of referral:
Specialized Experience/ Education GS-05: Applicants must meet one of the following: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the Federal government.
Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position. This may be paid or non-paid experience.
Examples of qualifying experience include experience performing a variety of miscellaneous tasks involving researching and processing financial documents, reviewing information and determining corrective action on accounts, researching for missing/unclear accounting information and reviewing financial documents submitted for completeness.
OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
A Bachelor's degree or four years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR Have a combination of education and experience equivalent to one year of specialized experience. Post-high school education must be from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
Specialized Experience GS-06: Applicants must have: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal government.
Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that demonstrates the ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position.
Examples of qualifying experience include:
Experience dealing with the public analyzing tax or accounting issues.
Experience resolving problems, adjusting accounts, and providing information on financial issues.
Specialized Experience GS-07: Applicants must have: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the Federal government.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that is related to the work of this position and has provided you with the competencies necessary for successful job performance.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
bookkeeping or accounting duties,
working with the public analyzing tax or accounting problems and resolving high-conflict differences through use of established guidelines,
dealing with customers in person, in writing or by telephone in a variety of situations that require solicitation of information to identify concerns and offer solutions, interpreting account information to address a variety of issues, guidelines, and past transactions.
