About the Position: This position serves as the Health Physicist, providing technical direction review support, and in representing the office in health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment matters.
Duties
Provide biological, toxicological, and health information support to an organization in carrying out radiation risk assessments for specific Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) sites.
Comply with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work that enhances the safety and security of the work environment.
Interpret and supplement health physics/radiation safety policy/standards and apply federally mandated standards and national consensus standards in establishing safety policy and programs.
Analyze accidents to identify causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Plan, organize, and conduct or direct surveys of radiation areas within customers organizations to include field measurements, wipe tests, and laboratory analysis.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 25% of the duty time.
- Employee must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and be willing to travel.
- Incumbent must pass physical for performing work in level "C" personal protection and maintain active participation in the Corps of Engineers medical surveillance program as mandated by OSHA.

Specialized experience: Providing technical direction, review, support in the areas of chemical, biological, health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment; Monitoring, reviewing, developing, and recommending technical documents regarding health physics/radiation protection safety/radiation risk assessment for Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) sites; analyzing radiological control practices and modify or initiate new programs, techniques, or procedures.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
Education
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
