The Full Time Cook position is located within the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Marion VA Medical Center in Marion, IL.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Perform a variety of cooking tasks without close supervision. Must have the ability to learn and retain information, to concentrate for extended periods of time while performing cooking, serving, and cleaning duties. Must be able to read and write, as well as perform arithmetic computation such as adding, multiplying, and dividing ingredients for recipes. Must be able to determine portion costs. Adjust recipes for number of specified servings as needed. Prepares meats for cooking such as grinding, chopping, scooping, cutting, slicing, flouring, and breading. Operate a variety of kitchen equipment, which utilizes gas, electricity, steam, or microwave heat sources. Properly clean, store, and maintain all kitchen utensils. Applies sanitation principles to safeguard food against spoilage and waste. Checks deliveries of food and supplies for quality and quantity against written standards and purchase order. Under supervision, stores or discards leftovers as prescribed in written procedures. Performs other duties assigned or as necessary. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/24/2024. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds (utensils or containers of food) and occasional lifting of food items over 40 pounds. Incumbent is subject to temperatures above ad below normal, steam, fumes and odors from cooking; cuts from knives and kitchen equipment; burns, noise, humidity and falling on slippery floors.
