This position is located at the Fayetteville National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Duties

The Cemetery Caretaker Technician performs position performs a variety of cemetery interment and maintenance tasks including manual labor and must have a valid driver's license. Under the direction of the cemetery caretaker Leader or the supervisor, the incumbent will operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, operating utility vehicles, tractors, spreaders, forklifts, power pressure washers, and augers. Power equipment used may include compressors, generators, jackhammers, augers, drills, chain saws, roto­ tillers, sod-cutters, etc. Also uses hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks, pry bars, hand tampers, sanders and wheelbarrows. With the assistance of higher graded workers, prepares for daily interment of casketed or cremated remains. Performs interment functions including excavating graves, using appropriate equipment, lowering remains in assigned gravesites, and backfilling with dirt. Receives headstones, which may include using a forklift to load and unload. Plans and performs gardening work. Responsible for inputting and retrieving computer data for routine reports. May also act as back up Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR) as required. Under the guidance of a higher graded Cemetery employee or the supervisor, performs cemetery representative functions. Greets visitors including family members and the general public. Respond to request and answers questions. Prepares all paperwork related to the interment process and assures that all deadlines, necessary information and procedures are met. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,07/30/2024. Your background must demonstrate work involved in operating vehicles and miscellaneous equipment used to conduct interments and ground operations; also possess skills to operate other types of power equipment, such as tampers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, back pack blower, trimmers, edger's, pressure washer, weed eater, and pumps. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate with written and oral instruction of a technical nature. Must possess computer skills to enter and retrieve data. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly lifting, reaching, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, turning and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to handle controls for operation of equipment and attachments. Strain from reaching, jerking, jolting by operation over rough surfaces can be experienced. The physical effort will be done over ground that is not level, in uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. When performing administrative functions, work is performed both indoors in an office setting and outdoors as the incumbent attends committal services during any kind of weather conditions. Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed outside in all types of weather and environmental extremes often in an open driver's seat or platform. The operator is exposed to injury from potential equipment malfunctions and subject to heat, cold, humidity, noise, and dirt, vibrations, dust, and exhaust fumes. The incumbent may operate machinery that causes noise and vibrations, emits carbon monoxide, and has moving parts that may cut or harm the body, and requires the use of safety-protective clothing and Devices. This work may be performed over uneven terrain. At times the incumbent will be exposed to dust, mud, water, fuel and lubricants, noise, and fumes from motor vehicles and other equipment. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drugs use prior to appointment.
