The U.S. Geological Survey's, Geology, Minerals, Energy, & Geophysics Science Center is seeking associate, undergraduate, and graduate level student's working towards a degree in hydrology, physical science, environmental science, chemistry, geology or related field, to gain practical experience in geological sampling, geophysical data collection, GIS. As a Student Trainee (Physical Sciences) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of geology and geophysics. Duties include: Perform geographic information analyses such as acquiring manipulations and displaying and archiving topographic data sets. Collect data through various methods such as aerial photography, balloon, drone and plane platforms, LiDAR, and GPS survey. Use aerial photographic sets to generate digital elevation models through Structure-from-Motion software. Use computer programs to prepare a variety of geologic and geochemical maps. Prepare displays of information on maps, cross-section, graphs, or tables as appropriate. Operate government motor vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands: Field assignments involve outdoor work where there is considerable walking and climbing over rough or mountainous terrain. The work requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crawling in restrictive spaces and defending oneself against physical attack. Work Environment: Work in the field involves exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions with exposure to poisonous growth and insects involving a high risk with exposure to dangerous situations.

Eligibility Requirements In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program: You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); AND Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; AND Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis; AND The duties of this position should be related to your academic or career goals. You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program. Students who successfully complete the internship program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition. Qualification Requirements This internship is geared toward students majoring in one of the following areas of study:the life sciences, the physical sciences, environmental science, geology, chemistry, or related fields. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-07: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level: Specialized Experience: one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of GS-5 level experience could include: taking measurements and collecting information learning to take proper samples conducting routine calculating plotting, and checking of numerical data preparing graphs and data profiles accomplishing routine analyses. **OR S.A.A.: Superior Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study.
