Duties
Major Duties:
Leads and provides daily direction to at least three (3) workers to accomplish trades work on a regular and recurring part of the job and exercised on a substantially full time and continuing basis.
Carpentry: Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. Constructs storage areas, workrooms, and offices within existing buildings including framework, rafters, joists, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, and flooring. Builds small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing structures. Constructs interior and exterior stairs. Installs exterior siding and roofing. Installs interior and exterior trim materials. Constructs and installs cabinets and builds countertops utilizing Formica or wood. Installs floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and wood.
Plumbing: Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment. Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers, and lay out of such things as angles, arcs, and circles. Lays sewer tile, replaces stools, lavatories; and replaces pumps and water meters.
Painting: Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon com pet ion. Prepare all finish and unfinished surfaces for resurfacing to arrive at a smooth and decorative appearance. Operate power equipment such as sanders and buffers in pre pa rig surfaces for finishing. Also use air-spray, air-less spray, rollers, brushes, trowels, screeds, viscosity testers, graining devices, and wet and other gauges.
Masonry: Take oral instructions, read blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches, incumbent plans and lays out masonry work. Be able to select the proper tools, determine material needed and accomplish the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices with no technical assistance.
Roofing: Must determine roofing work to be completed, locating leaks and determining their cause and extent of damage, selecting the work method to be followed for repair, and determining and using a greater variety of roofing materials and accessories such as shingles, roofing felt, and asphalt. Responsible for installing new roofs, including metal flashing, gutters, and other roofing accessories, and repair or replace sheathing, boards, beams, and joists.
Electrical: Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats.
Area Information:
This position is stationed at Grand Canyon National Park at the South Rim located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is located approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. Annual precipitation averages around 13 inches.
Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 75,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
South Rim Housing: Permanent and Term employees with a Full Performance Level (FPL) of a GS-09 or WG-8 and above will be provided the option of accepting assigned housing, participating in the normal bid system, or accepting shared housing. Permanent and Term employees with an FPL of GS-08 or WG-7 and below may be provided the option of participating in the normal bid system or accepting shared housing. Any employee assigned to shared housing may continue to bid into non-shared housing.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
