About the Position: This Flight Engineer is located at U.S. Army White Sands Test Center, Army Air Flight Detachment with duty location of Hollman Air Force Base, New Mexico. (merit)

Duties

Serve as Aircrew member on rotary wing aircraft by assisting the Pilot-in-Command in areas such as preflight, loading, weight and balance distribution, unloading, and post flight. Assist the aircrew in aircraft operations during flight. Utilize items such as navigational equipment, map reading, communication skills, checklists, and flight instruments and systems. Prepare aircraft for ground/flight operations for safety purposes. Perform standalone maintenance using items such as tools, test equipment, standard practices, and approved maintenance procedures. Assist individuals as part of an aircraft maintenance team. Utilize Aircrew coordination to facilitate areas such as safe operation of aircraft and maintenance actions. Prepare aircraft for the transportation of personnel in areas such as safety briefings, loading of passengers, coordinating directly with passengers while in flight, and unloading of passengers.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a Physical Requirement: Annual FAA Class III Physical.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Position requires travel away from the normal duty station (up to 10% of the time).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience, which includes: 1) Conduct maintenance on aircraft and aircraft components; 2) Perform checks of cargo for security; and 3) Maintain passenger safety during flight operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (NJ-02/GS-08). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Experience may have been gained in the following work situations: - Serving as an aircraft maintenance technician; - Operating aircraft systems and performing maintenance on rotary wing aircraft and systems; - Performing visual and operational inspection of aircraft engines, oxygen, fuselage, aerial refueling boom area, flight control surfaces; and electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems; - Monitoring and observing engine operations, aircraft systems, warning indicators and enunciator panels for system failures while in flight; - Performing post-flight inspection of the aircraft and all aircraft systems; - Repairing minor deficiencies and performing the support maintenance work involving the disassembly and modification of rotary and fixed wing aircraft.
