The Clinical Pharmacist Specialist Supervisor is responsible for the professional and administrative management of the assigned clinical pharmacist providers and will direct and coordinate the daily workflow and activities within the clinical section. Activities include coordination of staff scheduling and staff assignments, workflow monitoring and management, supporting veteran and non-veteran patient customer service to effect highly innovative and progressive clinical pharmacy services.

The Supervisor Pharmacist duties include, but are limited to the following:
Provides first-line coordination and oversight for pharmacist and technician work activities, including staff leave and scheduling and staff work assignments.
Monitors and provides first-line oversight of pharmacist provider work-related activities and works with pharmacy program managers to adjust staffing and personnel assignments based on workload needs.
Monitors and supports pharmacy compliance with existing regulatory rules, laws and standards.
Assists in the recommendation, drafting and implementation of departmental policies
and procedures.
Provides first-line personnel management and assists program manager when counseling intervention may be warranted.
Provides workflow coordination and supervisory oversight within a framework that is conducive to good performance and high morale. Promotes a zero tolerance environment when it comes to sexual harassment and hostile work environment issues.
Educational:
Incumbent serves as a preceptor to residents and students on clinical rotations sponsored by accredited schools of pharmacy.
Incumbent provides drug information and drug literature analysis as requested by the professional staff.
Incumbent coordinates, plans, conducts and documents appropriate education and training programs for medical, pharmacy and nursing staff to meet program, departmental and hospital goals and objectives.
Incumbent provides patient oriented educational activities that include disease states commonly encountered in the ambulatory care environment and written patient information materials.
Incumbent maintains knowledge of current pharmacologic therapies and shares information with pharmacy, medical and nursing staff when appropriate.
Clinical Practice (Patient Care):
Initiates and provides clinical pharmacotherapy services in ambulatory care clinics and other clinics as designated by the Clinical Chief, Pharmacy Service and Chief, Primary Care.
Provides advanced pharmacology and therapeutics consultation to the Medical Center professional staff regarding ambulatory care pharmacotherapies.
Evaluates non-formulary drug use through in-depth evaluation of patient condition and recommends alternatives when indicated.
Provides formal and informal drug information services to the Medical Center Professional Staff.
Obtains medication histories from patients and summarizes significant findings. These findings are documented in progress notes in the electronic medical record and are communicated to the patient care team.
Identifies actual and potential drug-related problems that may affect ambulatory care patients and acts to achieve problem resolution.
Works collaboratively with clinical pharmacist specialists and patient care team in an effort to achieve continuity of care.
Weighs the risk: benefit ratio of various therapeutic alternatives, develops a therapeutic plan utilizing the cost-effective pharmacologic treatment modalities available and institutes the plan or communicates the plan to the patient's primary care provider(s).
Develops individualized dosing regimens based on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug(s) employed and patient condition and institutes the regimen or makes appropriate recommendations to the primary care provider(s).
Develops rational alternative treatment plans in cases where the initial plan fails to achieve the desired therapeutic result and communicates this with the primary care providers.
Educates patients on the proper use and care of their medications and medication refill procedures.
Evaluates and ensures optimal medication regimens through analysis of medication profiles, laboratory data, medical and social data and direct patient observation or interaction.
Assists in the collection, reporting and assessment of Adverse Drug Reactions.
Applies drug literature analysis to develop and design clinically oriented responses to anticoagulation and primary care staff.
Provides literature interpretation and recommendations to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee as a consultant in drug information.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Education:
(1) The basic education requirement for this position requires you to be a graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. (2) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).
Licensure: You are required to have a full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-13
Experience: You must have 1 (one) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Preferred Experience: Experience coordinating staff scheduling and staff assignments, workflow monitoring and management, supporting veteran and non-veteran patient customer service to effect highly innovative and progressive clinical pharmacy services.
