This position is in the Bureau of Global Talent Management (GTM), Office of Accessibility and Accommodations (OAA), Disabilities and Reasonable Accommodation Division (DRAD). OAA serves as a centralized hub for disability services, aligning with the Department's overarching diplomatic mission.  After an initial training and travel documentation is complete, this position will be converted to a Limited Non-Career Foreign Service Appointment with an initial overseas post of US Embassy Ankara. 

Duties

Facilitates communication between ASL users and English speakers for a variety of events, including routine staff meetings, technical discussions, security investigations, diplomatic negotiations, and formal events with ambassadors and dignitaries. Interprets in-person, uses remote interpreting technologies, and engages in post-production work to ensure digital accessibility, adapting to the Department's hybrid environment. Serves as the principal interpreter, coordinating logistics such as pre-conference meetings, establishing interpreting teams, preparing briefing materials, conducting rehearsals, and facilitating post-event debriefings. Leads interpreter teams in sign choices, ensuring the selection of appropriate signs for accurately identifying groups of people, navigating politically sensitive subjects, and appropriately representing countries through sign language.

  • Medical clearance will be required prior to departing for designated work location at an overseas post.

Qualifications

Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.  Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience in translating, interpreting, or other work requiring the use of English and American Sign Language (ASL); or a combination of work (that required English and ASL) and training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or comparable training. IN ADDITION, this position requires the following additional specialized experience:   Experience providing American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting services in compliance with laws and orders, such as the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act. Experience utilizing technologies and resources to provide video conference/remote interpreting services. Experience providing interpreting services to ensure communication and cooperation across various cultural contexts THE FOLLOWING SELECTIVE FACTOR IS REQUIRED: Must have experience in interpretation of American Sign Language (ASL) into English, demonstrated through certification recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a similar body, adhering to professional standards outlined in the RID/National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).  In addition to language proficiency, interpreters commit to ongoing learning by deepening their understanding of relevant subjects through reading, research, and training. To prepare for diverse tasks, they may review briefing materials, conduct pre-assignment briefings, or conduct online research. Research may be necessitated in multiple languages. The following are examples of work in the required language that may have provided the required abilities: Community Sign Language Interpreter, Educational Sign Language Interpreter, or Sign Language Interpreting Specialist. International organizational work, such as the Peace Corps, World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI), World Bank, World Federation of the Deaf, or other relevant organizations. Professor or student of American Sign Language or Deaf Studies. **ALL APPLICANTS WILL BE TESTED BY THE AGENCY FOR PROFICIENCY ON A PASS/FAIL BASIS PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT.** There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-13 position
