This position is located in the Collections Maintenance and Stacks Management Section, Collections Management Division, Preservation Directorate, Discovery and Preservation Services (DPS) at the Cabin Branch location. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position. The position description number for this position is 063841.  

Duties

The incumbent works as the Collections Maintenance Worker/Truck Driver responsible for a wide array of Library collections-related activities, which includes: addressing the proper location of collections materials both on-site and off-site; shelf-reading to ensure collections are in proper sequence: shifting; maintenance of the collections, including such tasks as cleaning; security of the collections; and providing service on specific segments as those stored off-site. Collections include books as well as materials in non-book format, such as manuscripts, prints and photographs, recorded sound, moving image, and maps. Many of these items are rare, valuable and fragile and must be handled with extreme care. The incumbent is responsible for activities related to collections moves, such as erecting and dismantling shelving, operating both manual and power equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks; transporting materials from one building to another using a van or car; and transporting collections, equipment and supplies from one location to another, using a truck having a gross vehicle weight of over 26,000 pounds.

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to apply safety regulations, interpret instructions and follow directions.** Ability to operate motor vehicles.** Ability to perform standard motor vehicle operator responsibilities. Ability to operate forklifts and other powered and manual materials handling equipment. Knowledge of materials handling and warehouse procedures. Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
