Duties

The primary duties of this position are: Plans, executes and completes cartographic and Geospatial Information System (GIS) projects which may vary from a single task to a multifaceted process incorporating extensive coordination, research, data creation or manipulation, analysis, complex map or data output, presentations or training. Participates in planning, organizing, and conducting GIS project work and provides support for the GIS Team. Works to ensure that GIS datasets are fully documented and validated, including meeting BORGIS guidelines and metadata standards, including National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) or Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata standards. This is a temporary, competitive service appointment that is being offered on a "term" basis, not to exceed 4 Years. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. A term appointment may be terminated at any time prior to the initial end date of the appointment.

Basic Education Requirements: Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Evaluation of Experience: Applicants whose experience in cartography was in the Federal service may have gained this experience by working in an occupational series other than GS-1370. Occupations in which experience may have been gained include Geography, GS-150; Civil Engineering, GS-810; General Physical Science, GS-1301; Geodesy, GS-1372; and Land Surveying, GS-1373. In addition to the basic education requirement, in order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that the applicant meets the specialized experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume. To qualify at the GS-11 level, applicants must possess one year of professional (post bachelors degree) experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 in Federal service OR possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.. Specialized experience at this level is defined as: Compiling, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting, graphically in terms of drawings, maps, charts, and reports. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Applicants will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If selected, the selectee will be required to provide official college transcripts to verify educational qualifications. An official transcript must be sent directly from the University's Registrar's office and must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Academic transcripts certified by notary publics are NOT official. Official transcripts must be submitted prior to reporting to work as a condition of employment. Failure to submit official transcripts may be grounds for dismissal or rescission of the job offer.

Education

This position has a mandatory education requirement. Applicants must submit a copy of college transcript(s) (unofficial copy is acceptable) to support claimed education. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. Non-submission will result in being rated not-qualified for the position.
