The employee performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department. Duties include providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department. The incumbent will evaluate patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: The incumbent assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations. The incumbent assists Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition. The incumbent must independently recognize life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols. Performs airway management using BIPAP and advanced airway techniques including the use of LMA and oral intubations using laryngoscope if properly trained, credentialed and privileged may be included as responsibilities. This requires understanding in the use of pulse oximetry, capnometry, capnography, or other secondary confirmation methods to ensure correct placement of emergency advanced airway devices. Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus. Assesses patient status and keeps physician informed of any change or need for additional treatment. Dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care. Specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum is expected to be a routine part of his/her practice. Monitors and obtains test results as soon as available, and informs physicians promptly to facilitate patient care Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, shifts vary Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/31/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Evaluate patients for emergency medical conditions; assists physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures; recognize life threatening situations; airway management using BIPAP and advanced airway techniques, dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care, specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood tissue, urine, stool and sputum. (Your experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.) OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education (Transcripts required). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients.
