Serves as a Telecommunications Mechanic assisting in installing, modifying, maintaining relocating, adjusting, diagnosing, testing, and repairing a variety of communication systems (i.e.: Network, broad-band, and base-band LAN systems). Position will work in the Facilities Management Service Electric and Electronics Shops at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in Bay Pines, FL.
Duties
Duties include, but not limited to:
Assists in installing, modifying, maintaining relocating, adjusting, diagnosing, testing, and repairing a variety of communication systems (i.e.: Network, broad-band, and base-band LAN systems).
Installs and removes wires and cables between automation and communication components and to any outside cable system.
Install molding, conduits, insulators, connectors and terminal boxes, and other protective and support items.
Constructs various connectors and terminators such as, RJ12, RJ45. RS232C, including CAT 6A cable types, RS449 with 9-pin, 15-pin, and 25-pin connectors and attaches to a variety of cable types to interface data terminal equipment with data communication equipment employing serial binary data interchange.
Work under Lead supervision and conducts site surveys to determine work methods, manpower resources, tools, supplies, materials, etc., required to install, remove, and locate cable systems.
Performs on-site troubleshooting under Lead supervision to determine location and nature of the problem and makes repairs by replacing, modifying, adjusting, cleaning and lubricating cable system components.
Assists electricians with minor tasks, such as testing and replacing GFCI and electrical receptacles.
Ability to reset tripped circuit breakers, perform preventative maintenance checks on campus power generation systems, take log readings, etc.
Completes tasks to include lighting fixture, lamp and ballast removal and replacement, manage inventory of materials, and performs periodic maintenance.
Visually checks equipment and corrects sources of trouble such as bare wires or loose connections.
Lubricates and cleans mechanical components as necessary.
Work Schedule: ROTATING SHIFT, INCLUDING WEEKENS,HOLIDAYS, COMPRESSED, OR NON-COMPRESSED. Monday to Saturdays, 5:00 am-11:00Am, 11:00am-5:00pm,6:00am-12:00pm, 7:00am-1:00pm or 8:00am-2:00pm. (As per Service needs).

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires frequent bending, stooping, crawling, pulling cables/wires using various hand tools, climbing ladders, working in high places, and working overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Must use manual or portable power tools weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. Occasionally lifts materials and/or tools weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. The work is generally performed indoors, often in dusty, dirty or cluttered office areas. The employee is subject to electrical shock and minor cuts, bruises, and contusions from handling cable and equipment and from using power and hand tools.
