Duties

Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision. Receives assignments through Information Work Management System (IWMS), Supervisors or Work Leaders. Ensures work is completed to the customer’s satisfaction. Responds to building emergencies. Uses a wide variety of machines, hand tools, power tools, ladders and scaffolding. Assembles various building materials using accepted trade practices Finishes various surfaces utilizing items such as primers, paints, sealers, varnishes, finishes and wallcoverings. Performs work that involves the maintenance, alteration, repairs and construction of various materials such as wood, glass, metal, plastic, sheet rock, acoustical title, ceiling grids or related materials. Installs, repairs or replaces wood or metal window frames, doors, doorframes, baseboards, moldings, transoms and panels. Removes and replaces damaged sections of various flooring and subflooring materials. Performs preventive maintenance on various building systems. Interprets drawings, specifications, sketches, work orders and oral instructions. Analyzes and determines the work layout and work sequence of projects. May construct and repair high-grade wooden items, such as cabinetry and furniture.

Qualifications

To qualify for this WG-09 CARPENTER position your resume must demonstrate: (1) the Screen Out AND (2). the six individual Job Elements (1) SCREEN OUT: ABILITY TO DO CARPENTRY WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION REQUIREMENT: Carpenters in this position perform various tasks in connection with maintenance, alteration, repair, and construction projects across agency facilities without more than normal supervision. Work encompasses numerous building systems such as walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, doors, windows, stairs, casework, millwork, finishes and exterior structures. You must demonstrate fundamental knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to perform the work of the carpentry trade. At a minimum, your work must not require more than regular spot checks or guidance during progress and upon completion. (2) JOB ELEMENTS: Describe duties you perform that show you have (at a minimum): - fundamental knowledge of carpentry equipment and ability to perform routine carpentry work - ability to apply carpentry technical practices to perform basic carpentry tasks - ability to follow common carpentry instructions (work orders, drawings, sketches and/or diagrams) and carry out routine carpentry work - ability to successfully measure and lay out carpentry materials and complete common carpentry projects -- regular hands-on use of common carpentry tools used to complete basic carpentry work - ability to determine the types of materials needed to complete common carpentry tasks YOUR RESUME MUST SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS THE SCREEN OUT AND JOB ELEMENTS FOR THIS POSITION. CONDITIONS OF POSITION: Due to the nature of work in this position, the following conditions are essential for successful performance, and you must fully comply with these conditions to meet performance requirements. Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to these conditions will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series). (1) This is an emergency / mission-critical position. Youmay be called to work after-hours, on weekends and holidays. This position is not authorized for telework. (2) You may be required to report to or remain at a duty station to perform critical services when employees are generally excused for all or part of a workday in emergency conditions. (3) You may be required to report during irregular hours and travel in hazardous weather conditions. (4) Carpenters in this position are on-call 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, year around. (5) Work may be performed in a workshop (where there may be exposure to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, air particulates, chemical fumes and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment) OR at job sites (where there may be exposure to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders). (6) You may be required to work in confined areas, which may be dusty and dirty. (7) You may be required to support other agency buildings to provide critical services to sustain the operational needs of agency buildings. (8) Carpentry work requires frequent standing, stooping, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling and arm movement. (9) You may be required to stand for extended periods while operating machines such as bench players, saws and drill presses. (10) Heavy exertion and physical strength are required at frequent intervals to handle heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, framing members and other building and construction materials. (11) You may be required to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. (12) Carpenters are subject to cuts, bruises and contusions and are frequently exposed to the possibility of serious injuries, such as loss of fingers from accidents while operating woodworking machines. (13) Carpenters must understand and follow mandated safety procedures and wear mandated Personal Protective Equipment, including earplugs, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, respirator, and any other gear deemed required by the Carpenter Supervisor. (14) You may be required to wear a respirator and may be required to shave to ensure a proper fit. (15) You may be required to wear a uniform while working at the duty station. (16) Telework and Alternate Work Schedules are not authorized for this position; position is not authorized to be filled by outstationing.
