Duties

This position will be filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The Pathways Hiring Authority is designed to appoint students from a wide variety of educational institutions (undergraduate and graduate) into paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. Students are exposed to jobs in the Federal civil service by providing meaningful developmental work at the beginning of their career, before their career paths are fully established. The CDC utilizes these Hiring Authorities to fill vacancies in a variety of occupations. Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to the grade level of the position. Applications may be periodically referred to hiring managers both during the open period and after the closing date. Because of the large number of applications anticipated, applicants' status will not be updated. This announcement will be used to fill Student Trainee (Physical Science), GS-1399 positions at the GS-05 through GS-11 grade levels. Duties may include but are not limited to: Designing and developing experimental equipment, instrumentation, and prototype systems to monitor, measure and evaluate physical hazards. Conducting minor design and systems analysis for the development of experimental equipment, instrumentation and prototype systems. Preparing proposals for accomplishing the work. Participating in the development of performance and testing requirements and protocols. Performing data analysis, compilation and reduction. Developing portions of technical publications.

Students who expect to graduate this year and are enrolled or accepted in a professional education program must provide documentation of continued enrollment. Must be taking or is scheduled to take a course load at least half-time in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school. Must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Minimum Qualifications Requirements: For GS-05 grade level: Completion of 4 academic years/120 semester hours or more of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's or equivalent degree For GS-07 grade level: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education OR eligible under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision (see Education Section below) and completion of a bachelor's degree For GS-09 grade level: Completion of 2 full academic years of graduate level education, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree For GS-11 grade level: Completion of all requirements for a PhD or equivalent degree Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) is based on the following:
  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2years of the curriculum. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.
  3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies listed below. Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.
