Duties
Career-Seasonal: This role is classified as Career-Seasonal. Such appointments are permanent and carry the same benefits as Career positions, but they do not guarantee year-round employment. In this role, you will be actively employed from April to October, and will be in a non-paid status for the rest of the year unless additional work becomes available during that time. Even if non-pay periods are shortened, you must still expect to be in non-pay status for at least one pay period annually, as per NPS policy.
Major Duties: This position supports a senior supervisor with the prioritization and scheduling of trail work, including the various stages of seasonal trail projects. The incumbent is responsible for creating and submitting comprehensive and timely reports on the work completed and milestones achieved, as well as tracking the maintenance and progress of projects. As a field role, the incumbent will carry out carpentry tasks, such as shaping, notching, and coping with primarily heavy logs and rough-sawn lumber to construct and upkeep trail structures, in addition to performing primarily dry-stone masonry.
Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 lbs., must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel and other hand tools extensively. Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in mountainous terrain at elevations between 8,000 and 13,000 feet in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around livestock or explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around rigging equipment and machinery.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
The ability to Lead or Supervise. Providing operational oversight including distribution of work, teaching, and demonstrating trail maintenance construction methods/techniques to crews and volunteers. Must be able to perform a range of Maintenance Worker Leader(trails) tasks and can perform, lead, and train other maintenance workers, under normal supervision. These tasks include: assisting with or leading a trail crew in the construction, repair, and maintenance of drainage structures, brushing and clearing of trail corridors, safe felling of tress and hazard tress, dry masonry, carpentry, and simple rigging. Assisting with or leading a trail crew in building and repairing log and dimensional wood structures including multiple stringer bridges, retaining walls, handrails, steps, and causeways. Selecting proper tools and materials and assisting with scheduling the operational needs of a crew. I have the ability and experience to live and work out of backcountry camps. My work may be inspected upon completion by my supervisor for conformance to requirements. (SCREEN OUT).

Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
