This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Deputy Commandant for Mission Support, Force Readiness Command (FORCECOM), Maritime Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA) in Charleston, SC.

Duties

This position is located at the United States Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement Academy in North Charleston, South Carolina. The purpose of the position is to research and analyze legal issues relative to facts, issues and applicable policy; obtains additional facts and information; develops recommended conclusions with justifications; and prepares responses for attorney's review and signature.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).

Qualifications

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Drafting final appeal decisions; compiling and evaluating statistical data; conducting legal research into various sources of the law, including agency directives, prior appeal decisions, federal regulations, statutory materials, and federal court opinions; assisting in the preparation of agency and company directives; writing legal opinions, decisions, and letters; and providing guidance in the area of agency policy, regulatory modification, and legal interpretation. OR  Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related OR A combination of specialized experience and education. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
