We expect to fill 1 vacancy at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not-to-exceed 13 months with possible extension up 4 years without re-announcement.

Duties

Research, compile, and tabulate wildlife inventory data Conduct site, habitat, and vegetation monitoring and treatments as needed to meet management objectives Plans, aids in designing, and lays out projects for wildlife habitat improvement Complete inventories for specific species in potential habitat areas, document locations using maps and GIS/GPS technology Interpret aerial photos, land-sat imagery, and topographic maps to determine land use and vegetation distribution and to plot nest/herd breeding sites Knowledge of computer capabilities sufficient to produce reports with graphics, produce simple maps, develop spreadsheets, and enter, retrieve and manipulate data Reviews forestry, watershed, and range improvement project proposals for compatibility with wildlife needs and recommends to Biologist’s construction specifications or modifications needed to safeguard or enhance wildlife habitat quality Create analytical reports on environmental impacts to wildlife and present results at scientific and technical forums Performs on-the-ground inventories of wildlife and their habitat, analyzes the data and reports the findings; Performs on-the-ground surveys of wildlife habitat and prepares reports and makes recommendations to management on the findings Conducts compliance checks on minerals exploration, development, and operations, realty actions, and range improvement projects Ability to safely operate 2 and 4-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify for the GS-07 Biological Science Technician (Wildlife): You must posses one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include researching, compiling and tabulating a full range of wildlife inventory data. Leading or conducting field inventories of wildlife species to develop intensive scientific information. Collecting ecological site information for sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife -OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles. Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Education

This position has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) that must be met. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: To be considered, applicants must meet one of the below requirements:
  1. Research activity or control program work.
  2. Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment.
  3. Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.
Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience
