Duties
As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician you will:
Assist with and/or conducts research projects related to the biological sciences (i.e., pathology, physiology, zoonotic diseases, and molecular biology).
Design, coordinate and execute a complete project which includes responsibility for: developing the procedures to be used based upon established hypothesis; identifying expected results; resolving administrative details/problems; procuring resources needed; conducting and/or monitoring specialized tests to develop data; determining the need for and making adjustments/corrective actions during the study; refining, verifying, justifying, organizing data; preparing summary reports regarding progress and results of projects; and/or preparing sections of publications.
Oversee a major laboratory functional area, which will include responsibility for: monitoring a variety of specialized experiments and taking corrective action as needed; providing oversight and technical expertise to other laboratory workers in determining appropriate methodology, quality of results, and applicability of observations; and providing instruction/training to technical staff, students and junior level professionals in appropriate laboratory methods and practices.
Operate a variety of complex equipment, such as microscopes, microtomes, centrifuges, incubators, balances, etc., and is expected to identify/correct malfunctions independently.
Perform a variety of specialized procedures such as performing animal surgery; collecting tissue, isolating cells, and/or preparing sub-cellular material for investigation; and/or preparing specialized solutions and stains; drawing blood or collecting other specimens; mixing samples and specimens with reagents to perform chemical analysis; recording readings and other observations and outcomes.
Utilize computerized programs to perform data analysis; prepare summary reports; and/or maintain records of protocols, methods, instrument operating procedures and other pertinent data.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-9 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level, which must include the following experience: maintaining an inventory of laboratory supplies, performing procedures, autoclaving and necropsies with laboratory animals and sampling, processing and preparation of laboratory waste, tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by pathologist.
OR
Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree from an accredited college or university.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
