Duties
As a Firefighter, responds to fire alarms for all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations; wild land fires, hazardous material incidents, and aircraft emergencies.
As a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician, responds as a member of the department's hazardous materials team.
Uses a variety of hand and power tools and works in all phases of firefighting/rescue operations.
As an Emergency Medical Technician responds to accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses, and follows approved department protocols in providing basic life support and performing emergency procedures that are non-invasive.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program
- An individual not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
- Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Incumbent must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- The work requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required
- The appropriate Emergency Vehicle Operator’s certification to operate vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division is required
- Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
- Designated Mission Essential Position: Incumbent may be required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations
- Within 24 months of occupying the position incumbent must obtain and maintain the following DoD Firefighter Certification levels: Driver Operator – Pumper, Driver Operator - Aerial and Driver Operator – Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time
- Incumbent will be required to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. Performing rescue operations. Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06 or above).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Technician, and Airport Firefighter certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT-Basic Certification Card indicating a future expiration date.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
