About the Position: Performs work involved in the manufacture of forgings, weldments and other fabrications through the use of machine tools and precision handwork.

Duties

Determines which machine tool would best be used for each operation to be performed, which attachments are to be used on each machine and the proper sequence of operations on each machine. Lays out work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, model of part to be made or other specifications. Sets up and operates Computer Numerical Controlled machines and most types of conventional machine tools. Prepares area to be welded by cleaning, fitting, chipping, grinding, cutting, slag removal and grinds welds when required. Uses full range of welding equipment. Selects proper welding materials, tools, equipment, rod, flux, heat range, and feed for type of metals and thickness to provide proper weldments, full penetration, and complete fusion with minimum warpage, consistent with standard trade practices.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist (Welder) without more than normal supervision. (1) Perform machining operations using both conventional and Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools using close tolerances; (2) Set-up and operate a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders and saws; (3) Interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches, and; (4) Use tooling required to produce the features, tolerances and surface finishes to specifications; (5) Utilizes light and heavy gages, and hardened metals to weld assigned items, using flat vertical, horizontal and overhead positions to prevent overheating and distortion. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and crawling. Work may be done in awkward and cramped in hard-to-reach places. Frequently handles objects weighing from 20 to 80 pounds and occasionally objects weighing in excess of 80 pounds, with assistance from lifting devices and other workers, in setting up work and equipment and in completing assignments. Working Conditions: Works inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty and where there is a danger to skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive particles and hot metal; danger of skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds,; and danger to the fingers, hands and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces and moving parts of machines. The possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects exists. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, and or eye goggles.
