This position is in support of the Military Commissions Defense Organization (MCDO), which is responsible for providing defense legal services to detainees being tried in military commissions. The incumbent serves as an Investigator on a MCDO defense team and requires expertise on a broad range of investigate duties.
Duties
Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following:
Develops and administers investigative plans in defending the assigned cases through the pre-trial, trial and penalty phases in conjunction with the supervisory investigator and defense team attorneys.
Plans, organizes, and conducts difficult and complex investigations relevant to all phases of the defense case, both by determining the appropriate investigative steps and by taking individual actions in pursuit of those steps.
Preparing written statements or results of interview of witnesses as directed by team defense attorneys.
Developing mitigation evidence to present at trial on behalf of the accused.
Requirements

You may qualify at the GS-12level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the (GS-11) grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates:
1) Applying investigative procedures for criminal defense cases;
2) Assisting in preparing criminal defense cases for court proceedings; and
3) Assisting with interviewing witnesses and preparing reports for senior level review of criminal defense cases.
You may qualify at the GS-13level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the (GS-12) grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates:
1) Applying investigative techniques to obtain evidentiary information to support complex criminal defense cases;
2) Conducting analysis of criminal defense cases to determine the appropriate investigative process; And
3) Interviewing complex witnesses to prepare reports for various criminal defense cases, including capital cases.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
