About the Position: The incumbent will maintain and repair a variety of equipment at the 11 Flood control dams within the Los Angeles District and the Baseyard.

Duties

Maintain and repair a variety of equipment at multiple flood control dams. Perform maintenance and repairs on heavy automotive engineering equipment. Operate a dam and dam equipment during heavy rains and floods. Conduct troubleshooting to identify and repair equipment malfunctions. Perform heavy rigging for lifting heavy equipment to perform maintenance and repair.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires you to obtain and maintain a valid medical physical certificate.
  • This position requires you be able to lift at least 75 lbs.
  • This position requires shift work.
  • This position requires you to obtain and maintain a valid first aid certificate.
  • This position requires you to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • This position is subject to drug testing upon entry and at random during employment.
  • This position requires you to carry and maintain a government supplied cellular telephone.
  • This position requires travel to the flood control dam sites within the LA District based on management assignment. (Separate from business travel mentioned above)
  • This position may be required to work in permit and non-permit required confined space and implement proper rescue and entry techniques.
  • This position may require 12 hour shifts during emergencies and during the flood season (15 Nov through 15 April).
  • This position may require training and operation of self-contained breathing apparatus, escape packs, atmospheric monitoring devices and fall protection equipment.

I can maintain and service heavy automotive equipment and dam equipment. I can repair and maintain mechanical, electric and hydraulic systems with clear guidance and information. I can operate a dam and dam equipment under normal conditions. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, climbing, crouching and straining in awkward positions. Heavy physical effort is used to reach, pull, push, turn, and move requiring coordination of hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate controls for all types of equipment. Frequently lifts up to 75 pounds unassisted and moves heavier items with jacks, cranes, or hoists. WORKING CONDITIONS - A substantial amount of work is performed inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Employee is exposed to a variety of pests and insects with the possibility of bites. Employee is subject to unpleasant odors, blowing dust, high noise levels, and vibrations. Employee is subject to overturning equipment, electric shocks, and strain from lifting, broken bones, cuts, bruises, and falls from ladders. Work is sometimes in close quarters and near moving machinery and occasionally in high traffic areas. Required to operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads, being exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
