This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. The incumbent serves in an organizational unit within one of the program offices under the Chief Operating Officer at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), carrying out complex professional assignments involving delivery of advisory services to Federal agencies.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archivist, you will:
Contribute to the planning of programs leading to the identification and protection of permanently valuable records.
Participate in the development and delivery of formal and informal training for Federal officials intended to promote good recordkeeping and timely records retirement.
Coordinate and document the transfer of legal or physical custody of records from the records creator to NARA and resolves issues associated with transfers.
Prepare restriction statements governing records among holdings of the unit, enforces all applicable restrictions, and determines accessibility of classes of records.
In collaboration with preservation and conservation staff and other qualified experts, develop strategies for solving technical issues associated with records preservation, including issues associated with vendor performance and equipment acquisition and maintenance.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To be qualified for this position at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Experience researching and reporting on archival records. AND
- Experience providing customer service to various audiences through oral and written communication techniques.
OR
EDUCATION: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-9, you must have been at the GS-7level for 52 weeks.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To be qualified for this position at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
-Preforming archival functions, such as monitoring, researching and managing documents. AND
-Experience communicating and assisting with various audiences.
OR
EDUCATION: 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement.
OR
COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.NOTE: Only education in excess of the basic education requirement (i.e., beyond Bachelor's degree) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-7, you must have been at the GS-5level for 52 weeks.
Education
Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirement for all Grades:
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
