This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Lubbock, TX. In this position, you will perform a variety of tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy mobile engineering equipment; repair, maintenance and overhaul of automotive vehicles.

Duties

Repairs, overhauls, or modifies internal combustion engines (both gasoline and diesel) of heavy mobile equipment, automotive vehicles, and farm tractors. Diagnoses performance problems and as required, improvises replacement, repair, and troubleshooting techniques. Performs operational driving tests to determine serviceability. Troubleshoots, inspects, tests and analyzes vehicle computer/electrical control systems. Operates heavy mobile equipment and farm-type tractors. On occasion, assists facilities operations and maintenance team members with repair and preventative maintenance tasks.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 07/23/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration. Working Conditions Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Work indoors is performed in an environmentally controlled building that is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, some indoor work may be conducted in confined spaces and/or in areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, dusty, poorly lighted, or excessively noisy. Outdoor work often exposes the incumbent to adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat (95 degrees and above and cold weather 20 degrees in the winter), wind, humidity, precipitation, UV exposure, etc.; and outdoor work may sometimes occur in inclement weather. The work requires wearing protective equipment and clothing including safety shoes, goggles, gloves, and hearing protection. The equipment, tools, and tasks require care to avoid serious injury to self or others. The incumbent is exposed to electrical hazards, dirt, grease, working near operating machinery, and non-hazardous chemicals such as cleaning agents and disinfectants, and there is the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes. Noise levels can be high almost to the extreme requiring earplugs. Must observe all safety regulations. Physical Effort Work requires lifting and carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds (while loading and unloading cargo, handling heavy equipment, parts, tools and materials) with the aid of lifting equipment such as pallet jack and hand trucks. Work requires bending, stooping, kneeling, standing for extended periods and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and using arms for long periods of time using hand tools, power machines, shop tools and equipment. Some reaching and climbing on ladders and scaffolding are required for work both indoors and outdoors. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
