Duties
Supervises and directs maintenance and control of ledgers, reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger, and preparation of required reports and analysis of accounting information.
Oversees the development and production of special and regular accounting reports used for analysis, projection, planning, and controlling expenditures.
Trains and assists lower level accounting technicians with techniques to correct and process accounting inputs.
Provides accounting technicians with customer service training and technical assistance to ensure prompt, accurate, and effective service is provided to customers.
Assigns/reassigns work to subordinates based on priorities, consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and capabilities of subordinates.
Evaluates work performance of subordinates and prepares performance standards, evaluations and improvement plans.
The duties, described above, represent the major duties performed at the GS-8 level. The duties performed for developmental positions will be of limited scope and complexity to develop skills, proficiency, and work experience.

Specialized Experience at the GS-7: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-6) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.
Specialized experience at the GS-7 level is defined as: maintaining accounting or financial ledgers; posting financial transactions; preparing accounting reports; reconciling accounts and working with a variety of accounting and financial automated systems.
Specialized Experience at the GS-8: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-7) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.
Specialized experience at the GS-8 level is defined as: maintaining ledgers, reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers, and preparation of required reports and analysis of accounting information to ensure proper maintenance of ledgers and records, trial balances, reconciliations, adjustments, and corrective actions; working with a variety of accounting and financial automated systems; and providing professional advice, assistance, and information to customers and co-workers.
Time-in-Grade: Current or former federal employees who have held a GS position in the preceding 52 weeks, must meet the time in grade requirement. To be considered for the GS-7, applicants must have served 52 weeks as a GS-6 or higher in the Federal service. To be considered for the GS-8, applicants must have served 52 weeks as a GS-7 or higher in the Federal service.
You may qualify for consideration if meeting time-in grade, specialized experience, education requirement, 90 days after competitive appointment requirement, and all other qualification requirements within 30 calendar days after the closing date of the announcement, unless otherwise indicated on the announcement.
Education
GS-07 Substitution of Education for Experience: One year of graduate level education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience required when it is directly related to the work of the position being filled. (One full year of graduate education is the number of hours the school determines to equal one year. If this information is unavailable, 18 semester hours will be used as the standard.) Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
GS-08 Substitution of Education for Experience: Eighteen months of graduate level education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience required when it is directly related to the work of the position being filled. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
